PETALING JAYA: PAS’ refusal to work with Pakatan Harapan will only result in the Islamist party handing victory to Barisan Nasional and Umno in the next general election, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The former prime minister said based on PAS’ track record, the party would not win more than 15 of the 80 seats it contests in.

“PAS knows it will lose in most of the seats, but they want to contest anyway because of their principles, resulting in three-cornered or multi-cornered fights.

“But by contesting, PAS will not only lose ... it will drag down all other Opposition parties with it.”

And, Umno would win because of a broken Opposition faction, Dr Mahathir wrote in his latest blog posting.

He said PAS would spend “an exorbitant amount of money” just to grant victory to Barisan and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“So, it is indeed not extreme to say that PAS, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, is supporting Najib. It is true.

“The party’s insistence on nominating candidates for seats it won’t win means PAS supports Najib and Umno,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said PAS had done nothing but divide the Malays and Muslim community since it was formed.

Pakatan Harapan, which Dr Mahathir’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia is a part of, has been negotiating with PAS to join the Opposition front for nearly a year.

The main problem is PAS does not want to work with DAP.
