KOTA TINGGI: A smuggler and a tonto were arrested while changing the flat tyre of a lorry near Batu Tiga here.

Some 15,500 cartons of illicit cigarettes worth more than RM700,000 were seized from them.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Rahmat Othman said the suspects, aged 22 and 23, were arrested along Jalan Lombong at around 2.30am on Saturday.

They were detained by a patrolling unit from Batu Ampat police station while fixing their punctured lorry tyre by the roadside.

Initial investigations showed that the tonto was following the lorry in a Toyota Altis.

Supt Rahmat said the lorry was carrying 310 boxes of illicit cigarettes.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967.

Supt Rahmat added that both the suspects from Kulai would be remanded for four days to assist in investigations.

In an unrelated case, a 45-year-old man was feared to have drowned after he jumped into the river to ‘save’ his boat.

Supt Rahmat said the incident happened at around noon on Saturday when the victim, Azizi Amir, and his friend Mohd Rais Yatim were fishing underneath a bridge near Sedili Besar.

Rais claimed that Azizi had jumped into the river to stop his boat from being swept away by strong currents but then he disappeared.

Supt Rahmat added that a search and rescue team involving various agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department, police, marine police unit, Department of Fisheries and local fishermen has been formed.

He urged those with information on the case to contact the state police hotline at 07-221 2999.
