KUALA LUMPUR: The NewGen party has formally submitted its application to join Pakatan Harapan in its bid to become the fifth component member of the Opposition coalition.
Its deputy president Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan said the party hopes the Pakatan presidential council will approve its application.
He said this to reporters after submitting the application at Pakatan Harapan's office in Parliament Tuesday.
The application was received by PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil on behalf of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
NewGen will officially have its name changed to Parti Bebas Rasuah when given the nod by the Registrar of Societies.
Khairuddin, who is former Batu Kawan Umno deputy chief, however, said it is still “premature” for the party to request for seats in the upcoming general election.
The main focus for now is to bring down the Najib government, he said.
Asked whether the coalition had room for another party, Fahmi said Pakatan Harapan is always open to other parties who agree with the coalition's framework and reform agenda.
He said the presidential council will decide on the matter at a meeting on Wednesday.
NewGen had recently announced several new appointments, including that of former Umno, PKR and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) member Datuk Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor as the new president.
Syed Nazarudin Syed Aziz and Rajaretinam Armuggan have been named vice-presidents.
NewGen party founder S. Gobi Krishnan, who was formerly with PKR, maintains his position as the secretary-general.
Pakatan Harapan now consists of PKR, DAP, Amanah and Pribumi.
