PETALING JAYA: It is ridiculous to impose a blanket ban on a movie based on one offending character, says Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.
He said that the Beauty And The Beast movie should be looked at in its entirety and should not be banned for having a gay character in it.
Nazri said that even though homosexuality is an offence in Malaysia, a movie should not be banned for having a gay character.
“We should allow people to decide for themselves.
“There are stories about murder, and by law, that is wrong. But do you ban them? Where do you draw the line?” he asked at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
He was commenting on Beauty And The Beast movie, where the Malaysian release date has been postponed indefinitely.
The movie’s Malaysian distributor, Walt Disney Co (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, said the movie’s opening date in Malaysia, originally set for Thursday, has been postponed due to an “internal review”.
No further reason for the postponement was given, and there was no indication of a new release date.
