JOHOR BARU: The driver involved in the cycling mishap which claimed eight lives here has been released on police bail, says Johor police chief Comm Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd (pic).

He said the 22-year-old woman was released Sunday after police recorded her statement.

"The police are completing the investigation paper on the mishap before submitting it to the deputy public prosecutor for further action," he told reporters after attending the Chinese New Year celebration for the Pulai constituency here.

Comm Wan Ahmad said that the police would also not hesitate to charge parents of the cyclists in court.

"I have already directed for operations to be conducted to pick up such underaged children loitering in the city areas especially at night and during weekends.

"We will then hand them over to their parents.

"But the time has come for the police to use whatever laws or provisions to take a more drastic approach," he said, adding that they have identified at least 60 such children who loiter until the wee hours of the morning.

During the accident on Saturday, a car ploughed into a group of youngsters at about 3.30am, killing eight youngsters.

Two other teenagers are still in critical condition and warded at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital's intensive care unit while another six, who suffered broken limbs and head injuries, are still in hospital.
