KUALA LUMPUR: Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos wants to resign from his posts in Umno and Barisan Nasional to uphold the honour of his party.
According to Jamal, this is to ensure that he does not tarnish the reputation of his party.
In a press conference at his home in Ampang Tuesday, Jamal said he will submit his resignation on Wednesday.
In a video posted on his Facebook Monday, Jamal said he would step down from his position as Sungai Besar Umno division chief and focus on running an "illegal gambling den".
"I will be submitting my (resignation) letter to Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar.
"Whatever his decision may be, I will accept it," he said to cries of his supporters who insisted that he should not resign.
"I am a man who loves my party dearly, both Umno and Barisan. I do not want the names of these parties to be affected by my activities as an NGO leader.
"I know my actions may not be legally right, but I was doing my part for the people of Selangor. I do not want my friends and family to be subjected to 'gambling addiction'.
"As for my NGO posts, I do not think there is any conflict. However, if the members feel I should step down, I do not mind doing so," he said.
On his statement about wanting to open his own gambling den, Jamal said he was merely being cynical.
"I wanted to see how easy it is to get a licence to run a gambling den.
"From what I understand, in the last five days since I was arrested, 28 licences have been given out by the local council for such premises.
"The sad thing is, it's not even in the jurisdiction of the police to catch these people, because they are licensed," he said.
Busloads of his supporters at his house shed tears at Jamal's announcement of his intention to resign.
Last Thursday, police arrested Jamal in connection with a theft at an entertainment outlet in Ampang while nine of his friends were nabbed the night before.
He was released Monday after being remanded for five days to assist police in their investigations.
His nine friends were also released.
