YONG PENG: All MCA divisions in Johor have until June 30 to complete preparations for the general election, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Wee, who is Johor MCA chairman and party deputy president, said the 96 divisions should be ready by the third-quarter of the year.

“Whatever needs to be done or given out must be completed by then, including organising the polling district machinery, programmes with members as well as their biometric verification.

“Although a date (for election) is yet to be confirmed, setting a deadline is necessary,” he told reporters after attending the Johor MCA Chinese New Year celebration here yesterday.

He encouraged grassroots leaders to complete the biometric verification for at least 70% of the members in their areas.

He also said that there were higher chances of active local councillors being selected as candidates for GE14.

On former PKR leader Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s expected move to join DAP next week and possibly contest in Johor Baru, Dr Wee said the Barisan Nasional component parties were ready to face anyone.

He said that the Johor Baru district, including Pasir Gudang, Pulai and Gelang Patah, were well secured with strong Barisan leaders such as Tan Sri Shahrir Abd Samad and Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

“I would not be surprised if he (Zaid) takes over Gelang Patah for the Opposition as it is likely that Lim Kit Siang will pull off another parachuting stunt and move to another area to contest,” said Dr Wee. “Nevertheless, we are ready to face the contenders.”

He also slammed the Opposition, particularly the DAP, for its continuing inconsistencies in their stance, especially on their alliance with PAS.

“Even today, the party refused to comment on PKR-PAS co-operation in the coming elections,” said Dr Wee.

“So, it seems like they are all sleeping in one room but refusing to acknowledge that they are roommates,” he said, noting that PAS was still a close associate of PKR in Selangor.
