PONTIAN: The body of a missing fisherman who tripped from his boat and fell into the sea off Tanjung Piai here has been found some 700m from the shore.

Maslan Samedi, 51, was feared drowned after he lost control of his boat while on his way to pick up workers from a man-made island near the Pangkalan Perpat Pungur jetty at about 3.40pm on Wednesday.

Pontian OCPD Supt Zakaria Abd Rahman said the victim's body was discovered at about 6.20pm Thursday.

"The villagers and fishermen were the first to spot the body before authorities brought the remains back to shore.

"The remains have been sent to the Pontian Hospital for a post-mortem," he said Thursday.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Johor Baru district commander Iskandar Ishak said that Maslan was a fisherman in the area but also worked part-time by transporting workers to and fro from a land reclamation area near Tanjung Piai.

He said the victim was not feeling well, adding that the weather and currents were normal at the time of the incident.

Iskandar said a witness claimed the boat spun around before Maslan fell off the boat and was swept away by the currents.
