KOTA KINABALU: A suspected gang leader was shot and injured as he was being arrested by police at a parking lot in Taman Bukit Setia, Sepanggar.
High on the wanted list, the Geng Saldi leader suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm and ribs but was reported to be in stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
City police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said three policemen initially spotted the suspect sitting in a Honda City car at about 2am.
They approached him and identified themselves but the suspect refused to cooperate, forcing policemen to smash the driver’s door window, he said.
ACP Chandra told reporters at the scene that the suspect took out a meat cleaver and swung it towards the policemen before one of them shot him twice.
Another suspect in his 20s, believed to be an accomplice, was also arrested nearby.
Initial investigations, he said, indicted that the main suspect was wanted in connection with 13 cases including robbery, car theft and house break-ins. A recent case took place in the interior Keningau.
He said the gang was active since December.
Police also seized the meat cleaver along with housebreaking tools from the duo.
“The suspect is also being investigated for the attempted murder of the policemen,” said ACP Chandra.
