PETALING JAYA: Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan's dream to provide free transportation to students in Kota Belud, Sabah has become a reality.
"It has always been my dream to provide free transportation to students to go to school in my constituency, especially for students who otherwise would have to walk 5km per day every morning and 5km under the hot afternoon sun," said Abdul Rahman in a Facebook post on his official page on Sunday.
The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department put up the post after delivering six vans, one pick-up truck and 200 bicycles to rural schools in Kota Belud under a pilot program courtesy of the Prime Minister's Department economic planning unit.
He added that his dream has "come true" and said that students need a "fresh" body and mind to appreciate lessons at school.
"When they are tired from the kilometres of walking to go to school, we have denied them the opportunity to get a well-rounded education," said Abdul Rahman.
He added that he would extend the programme to other areas if it is successful.
"If the programme is successful especially in terms of maintenance of the vehicle and the responsibility of the parent-teacher associations (PTAs), I will extend this program to other areas," said Abdul Rahman.
