BALIK PULAU: The body of a missing fisherman whose boat sank on New Year’s Eve, was found floating about 20km west of Muka Head, Teluk Bahang.

Fishermen from Sungai Udang near here spotted the body of Low Kiau Ming while returning to their jetty with their overnight catch.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) District II director Kapt Rozali Mohd Said that the fishermen spotted the body at 8.45am yesterday and alerted the authorities.

The boat carrying Low, 56, from Pangkor, Perak, and two other fishermen sank about 2.5km from Muka Head at about 8.30am on New Year’s Eve.

The two other fishermen were rescued by a passing boat but Low went missing.

“The MMEA, police, Civil Defence Force and Fire and Rescue Department took part in the four-day search.

“Fishermen also helped to raise the sunken vessel on Monday and the boat is now at the Fisheries Development Authority jetty in Teluk Bahang.

Kapt Rozali said a probe was ongoing but initial information showed the mishap was due to bad weather.

“The boat probably had a problem with its bilge pump. Strong waves could have flooded the boat and the water could not be pumped out,” he told a press conference at Ujung Batu Beach near the former Penang Mutiara Beach Resort yesterday.
