SHAH ALAM: A Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement officer was killed in a freak accident after a trailer ran over him near the Setia Alam toll plaza here.
Mohd Ridzuan Yusuf, 32, was conducting an inspection exercise when the tragedy happened Wednesday afternoon.
The JPJ officer, who hails from Malacca, died on the spot due to severe head injuries.
Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Shafien Mamat, who was at the site, said Mohd Ridzuan was part of a four-man team carrying out a routine enforcement exercise.
He added the deceased was stationed a distance away from his colleagues when the accident happened.
The trailer driver, in his 60s, had stopped by the side of the road to make a call to find out where he was supposed to deliver the goods in his vehicle.
The trailer ran over Mohd Ridzuan when the driver started driving his vehicle to continue his journey.
"We think the driver was looking to his right as he was moving out.
"We will be investigating this and have detained the man pending an investigation,'' said Asst Comm Shafien.
He said the victim's colleagues only realised what had happened after a witness told them about it, adding that this was possibly due to the distance between the victim and his colleagues, combined with the roar of the vehicle engine.
Mohd Ridzuan's remains were sent to the Shah Alam Hospital for a post-mortem.
"The accident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act,'' said Asst Comm Shafien.
