A 20m deep landslide that stretched to some 30m long at Felda Penggeli Timur here in Kota Tinggi on Nov 21, 2016.

KOTA TINGGI: Villagers in Felda Penggeli Timur here were given a rude shock when the main road leading into the residential area collapsed due to a landslide.

The road had collapsed into a 20m ravine and stretching some 30m in length, following heavy rain on Sunday evening.

Village chief Hambari Abd Rahman said residents noticed small cracks on the road due to soil erosion several days earlier.

“I think the heavy rain over the weekend worsened the situation, leading to soil erosion.

“Luckily, no one was hurt,” he said.

Deputy Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, who is the Tenggara MP, said Johor Public Works Depart-ment had allocated RM200,000 for repair works at the affected area.

“For the time being, the road is closed for safety measures and a cleaning up operation will be carried out today,” she said in a statement.

Halimah said that full upgrading works would be conducted once the department’s slope engineering division approved an allocation.
