KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein is among the latest personalities to weigh in on Jakim’s ban on the use of the name “hot dog” in menus.
"I have been eating hot dogs all my life! It's never been an issue," he said, adding that Jakim would take into account public opinion of the issue.
“Jakim has always taken public opinion into consideration.
“So if public opinion doesn't divide then it's not an issue. Undivided public opinion is the way forward," he said.
He stressed that it did not make sense to allow a matter as small as the name hot dog to divide the public.
Dog and “hot dog” are not the only contentious words when it comes to Jakim’s halal certification standards.
Jakim had wanted pretzel store franchise Auntie Anne to rename its Pretzel Dog to Pretzel Sausage and reapply for certification for its outlets based on zones to facilitate the auditing process
