PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry has announced that the 21,000 Matriculation students whose Pocket Money Allowance (EWSP) was delayed will receive it by Oct 18.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry said it was aware of the delay in the allowance payment since August.

"The delay is because the Ministry needs to balance the remaining allocation for the Ministry to ensure it is used optimally.

"We are committed and doing our best to ensure the allowance is channeled to all the 21,000 students from 15 matriculation colleges nationwide, latest by Oct 18, to their respective accounts," it said.

Meanwhile,Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli said the students would receive allowances over the next few days following some “technical issues.”

He added that a team from his office will be providing aid to the affected students.

Rozman said he had spoken to Education Minister Datuk Mahdzir Khalid who had assured him that the allowances would be paid by this week.

“Mahdzir told me he was aware of the predicament that some of the Kolej Metrikulasi Labuan (KML) students were going through, especially those from low income families,”

"College officials had arranged for them to get food from the canteen while various NGOs in Labuan had also stepped in to provide food to students who needed help," he said.

He stressed that most KML students were receiving allowances from their families.

“The situation is not as dire as it is made out to be in some social media networks. Students who are in need are getting the help,” he said.
