BINTULU: A sudden burst of gale-force winds swept through part of the Kidurong industrial estate about 20km outside of Bintulu town in northern Sarawak on Wednesday afternoon, toppling steel beams and iron scaffolding at a heavy industry plant.
Some seven cars and six cranes were smashed as tonnes of material came crashing down at part of the fertilizer plant that was under construction during the freak winds that happened between 2-2.30pm.
The Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department said that nobody was injured in the incident.
Kidurong state assemblyman Chiew Ching Sing said the public was surprised as other parts of Bintulu district were relatively calm despite there being some rain.
The Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department said it has deployed a team to the affected site.
Works in that area have stopped for now and the workers have been told to stay away until the collapsed steel structures are cleared.
