GEORGE TOWN: The rain did little to dampen the enthusiasm of some 22,000 participants of the Penang Starwalk.

The Penang Times Square was bustled with activity as Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas flagged off the walk for the participants who set of with their umbrellas at 7am Sunday.

Also present were Star Media Group Bhd group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, event chairman Simone Liong, YTL Communications (YES) chief executive officer Wing K Lee, Penang Amateurs Athletics Association Datuk Syed Mohd Aidid and Ivory Properties chief operations officer Goh Chin Heng.

Early birds began arriving in the mall premises from 5am, all pumped up for the annual event, which includes variety shows and the highly anticipated lucky draws.

The 7km route includes landmarks like Komtar, City Hall, Fort Cornwallis, St George’s Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kapitan Keling Mosque and Khoo Kongsi.

Starwalk 2016 is jointly organised by Star Media Group and the Penang Amateur Athletic Association (PAAA), with YTL Communication Sdn Bhd (YES) as the platinum sponsor.

Silver sponsors are Eastern & Oriental Berhad, GUH Holdings Bhd, Federal Oats Mills Sdn Bhd, Perfect Food Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd, F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd and Chuan Sin Sdn Bhd (Spritzer).
