PASIR GUDANG: Housewife Siti Nur Sharinah Mohamad was resting in her bedroom with her four-year-old son when a freak storm hit Kampung Pasir Putih here.
Panic struck when her house zinc roof was blown apart by the strong winds that lasted about seven-minutes at around 2.30pm on Friday.
“I rushed out of the house with my son and four family members. It was chaos for a moment, as my neighbours were also screaming and crying.
“In shock, we just stood under heavy showers until other neighbours came to our aid and gathered the victims at the hall nearby,” she told reporters when met at her home here on Saturday.
The 23-year-old said that she decided to put up a night at her mother-in-law’s house as most of her home items were damaged in the incident including electronic gadgets and furniture with estimated losses of close to RM10,000.
Meanwhile, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced some RM80,000 in welfare aid to be allocated for the 80 families whose houses were damaged.
"Based on my personal assessment, I see a need to help the victims rebuild their homes so that they can resume their normal life.
"The storm that wrecked their houses have force some to seek shelter at the kampung's multipurpose hall while other temporarily staying with relatives," he said after visiting the kampung here on Saturday.
He said that half of the aid would be chanelled from the Mentri Besar's office while the other half would come from the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council Foundation.
“We feel sorry for the victim but I am relieve that nobody was hurt in the incident,” he said adding that the state Welfare and Religious Departments would be assessing the total damages.
