SEPANG: Two men have pleaded not guilty to assaulting Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Ibrahim Sahib Ansar at the KL International Airport (KLIA).
Businessman A. Kalaimughilan, 26, and taxi driver V. Balamurugan, 32, were charged at the Sepang Sessions Court here with rioting and causing injury to Ansar at about 3pm last Sunday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Fariza Hamzah asked for bail to be set at RM20,000 each, arguing that the men smeared the nation’s image.
However, the men’s lawyer M. Manoharan pleaded for lower bail, as they came from poor families and had no criminal record.
Judge Muhammad Faizal Ismail set bail at RM7,000 each with one surety and fixed Oct 7 for mention.
Last Sunday, Ansar was assaulted by a group of eight to 12 people after sending off Sri Lankan Primary Industries Minister Daya Gamage at the airport.
