PETALING JAYA: The National Day celebration is not just for those in peninsular Malaysia but for all Malaysians.
MCA deputy national organising secretary Senator Datuk Chai Kim Sen said even though it was the joint negotiations by Umno, MCA and MIC that achieved sovereignty from colonial rule, Merdeka Day was a celebration for all Malaysians, irrespective of their state.
“Why is Sarawak DAP so ashamed of Aug 31? It was only in 2014 that Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen disparaged those standing to sing Negaraku at cinemas on Merdeka Day as ‘ridiculous’,” he said in a statement.
He said this 59th Merdeka achieved the joy of national unity long sought for, when multiracial Malaysians cheered our successful Olympians on their arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
He said that Sarawak DAP veered on destroying the struggles leading towards national independence with its unacceptable call to Sarawakians not to celebrate Aug 31.
“Does Chong even see himself as a Malaysian citizen? Two-time Olympic medallist Pandelela Rinong, a Sarawakian, participated in the Hari Merdeka parade on Aug 31.
“She trained and contested as a Malaysian citizen and secured her medals as a Malaysian. It was the Jalur Gemilang being raised and not any state flag,” he said.
