KEPALA BATAS: Malaysians expressed their appreciation to the country’s Olympics team for their outstanding performance and for making the country proud.
That was the message posted by most Malaysians after a nail-biting clash between world No. 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei and China’s second-seeded Chen Long in the men’s singles final at the Rio Olympics.
The team did their best and despite failing to bring home a gold medal, they are still heroes.
Chen Long defeated Chong Wei 21-18 and 21-18 in a neck and neck battle.
Restaurant owner Mohd Zambree Yaakob, 47, said he wasn’t sad with the defeat.
“We had high hopes that Chong Wei can win the gold medal for Malaysia, but this is sport. Anything can happen.
“Our ‘pilots’ ... all five of them have been tirelessly cooking the best roti canai for our customers as they watch the game,” he said at his restaurant.
Roti Canai Mamu Penaga is renowned among the community, especially in Penaga, for its roti canai terbang.
The roti canai terbang comes from a unique technique of flipping the bread by the restaurant’s kitchen crew called “pilots”.
Former national coach and former coach to Chong Wei – Datuk Misbun Sidek – was also present among the crowd.
He said although Chong Wei did not manage to bring home the gold medal for the country, he was still an extraordinary athlete.
“You can’t find anyone like him for at least 10 to 15 years.
“He has done so well.
“I have always advised him to be himself and don’t hold back,” he said.
He was present with the members of the Nusa Mahsuri Badminton Club.
