KUCHING: Pandelela Rinong's family gathered in front of the television and prayed as the national diver stepped up the platform for her final dive.
Their prayers were answered.
Her father Pamg Joheng was beaming from ear to ear yesterday. He said the family got up at 1am to watch her and Cheong Jun Hoong compete. Her mother Hartini Lamim did not go to bed at all.
“After the fifth and final round, the silver medal was confirmed. We were so excited watching them progress through the rounds. And we’re so proud of Pandelela because she has done better than the bronze she won in London four years ago,” Pamg said.
An equally delighted Hartini, 47, agreed that the silver medal was a wonderful surprise.
Pamg and Hartini will now fly to Brazil on Monday with their son Pardika Indoma to watch Pandelela compete in the 10m individual platform event next week.
“Pandelela arranged the trip because she wanted us to be there for the individual event,” Pamg said, adding that they would be in Rio for eight days.
“We consider her a warrior. She's highly motivated and always works hard and we’re thankful for that,” Hartini said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government would decide on an incentive for Pandelela once the Rio Olympics were over.
