KOTA BARU: The marine police seized 20 buffaloes worth about RM100,000, which were smuggled from Thailand early Monday.

The buffaloes were in the midst of being tethered to some bushes by several men at Kampung Pisau Raut in Tumpat when a police team arrived about 3am.

Upon spotting the police, the men abandoned the animals and escaped into the darkness, said Pengkalan Kubor Marine Police Force operations camp commanding officer ASP Ahmad Azmi Abd Rahman.

He said initial investigations revealed a syndicate might have been smuggling buffaloes from Thailand for sale to a ready market here.

“In today’s seizure, we found the 20 buffaloes wet and covered in mud, indicating they were smuggled from Thailand via the Golok River,” he told reporters.

He said the buffaloes would be handed over to the Department of Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services in Pengakalan Kubor for further action. - Bernama
