KOTA KINABALU: The east coast town of Tawau will host festivities marking the launching of the this year’s National Month (Bulan Kebangsaan) and flying the Jalur Gemilang campaign.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will launch the event on Aug 6 which is a prelude to the Aug 31 Merdeka Day celebrations, said state Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Hajiji, who is chairman of the state-level National Day celebrations, said a myriad of events would be held following the launching to promote patriotism among the people.

These included the distribution of the Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags to tens of thousands of people, in addition to exhibitions on the nation’s founding and its progress.

Hajiji said those with a creative streak would have the opportunity to showcase their talent through a Merdeka photography competition.

Students would also be invited to participate in a selfie photography competition as well.

The highlight of the celebrations in the state would be the Merdeka Day parade.

“This year, some 300 contingents have been invited to take part in the parade and if everything works out, it will be the biggest one yet,” said Hajiji.

Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman would be joining thousands of people to witness the parade to be held at the seaside along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens in the city’s downtown area.
