KOTA KINABALU: The east coast town of Tawau will host festivities marking the launch of this year’s National Month (Bulan Kebangsaan) celebrations and flying the Jalur Gemilang campaign.

State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the event, which was a prelude to the Aug 31 Merdeka Day celebrations, would be launched by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Aug 6.

Hajiji, who is chairman of the state level National Day celebrations, said a myriad of events would be held following the launch to promote patriotism among the people.

He said these include the distribution of the Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags to tens of thousands of people in addition to exhibitions about the nation’s founding fathers and its progress.

Hajiji said those with a creative streak will have the opportunity to showcase their talent through a Merdeka photography competition.

Students would also be invited to participate in a selfie photography competition as well.

He said the highlight of the celebrations in the state would be the Merdeka Day parade which was expected to be the largest one so far.

“This year, some 300 contingents have been invited to take part in the parade and if everything works out, it will be the biggest one yet,” said Hajiji.

He said Sabah Yang di-Pertua Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman would be joining thousands of people to witness the parade to be held at the seaside Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens in the city’s downtown area.
