KUALA LUMPUR: MCA will intensify its efforts to get more youths, especially among the Chinese, to take advantage of the many opportunities in the agricultural sector.
Its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the party planned to spread the message, initiatives and programmes introduced by the Government to help youths in the industry.
“There are many opportunities and initiatives introduced to help farmers and those interested to join the sector but they are yet to be properly explained.
“MCA, via our Youth wing, will continue to disseminate the latest information about the Government’s transformation plan, especially to members of the Chinese community who are not well-versed in it.
“Sometimes, the message does not even reach the Chinese community,” he told a press conference at Wisma MCA after launching the first annual general meeting of the Malaysian Youth Farmers Co-operative (KPMM) yesterday.
At the event, KPMM signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Kooperasi Serbaguna Malaysia Bhd and Karak Land Sdn Bhd to allow for the development of unused land for agricultural projects.
Liow said efforts such as those by KPMM were aimed at attracting youths to take up modern farming.
“We also get support from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry to increase productivity and other aspects,” he added.
Liow urged more companies and private entities to cooperate with KPMM and deposit their land to woo young farmers.
“Previously, many farmers had to wait for years to get government land for agricultural purposes.
“Now we use the synergy between KPMM and other cooperative bodies to help our youths,” he said, adding that there were more than 400 KPMM members nationwide.
MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said the MoUs would provide young farmers with land to plant fruits for agro-tourism purposes.
“We have sent our representatives to check the land on what’s best to be planted there,” he said.
Introduced in 2015, KPMM will act as a middleman to match suitable land owners with entrepreneurs and advise on the possible projects according to the type of land.
