Dieticians advise against raffia string-tied Bak Chang


Twine from natural materials should be used to tie bak chang, although Singapopre's AVA says chemical leachate from raffia string is negligible.

SINGAPORE: Although there are no studies on whether cooking with raffia string could pose a danger to health, dieticians here advise using other alternatives.

These experts say bak zhang (rice dumplings) should not be cooked with raffia string as the material is not made for cooking.
