SUNGAI BESAR: Barisan Nasional’s big win in the Sungai Besar by-election will provide the impetus for the coalition to wrest Selangor from the Opposition, said Selangor Barisan chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar.

He said the victory would serve as a call of duty for the Barisan election machinery, especially in Selangor, to continue efforts and preparations for the coming 14th general election.

“Though the victory in Sungai Besar is something to be proud of, we in Selangor have a bigger task, that is to gear up for the 14th general election. I feel the strategy used here can be improvised to wrest Selangor from the Opposition,” he told reporters on Saturday night.

Selangor Barisan Wanita chief Datin Nor Hayati Onn said the win was able to restore the pride of the coalition which had been tainted after losing the state to the Opposition in two elections.

Nor Hayati said all the hard work had paid off in Sungai Besar although the bigger task would be for Selangor Umno to prepare for the general election.

In the Sungai Besar by-election, Barisan candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi beat Amanah candidate Azhar Ab Shukur and Dr Abdul Rani Osman from PAS by a 9,191-vote majority to retain the parliamentary seat that was held by Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon before her death in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5. – Bernama
