KOTA KINABALU: Police are investigating whether there was negligence by personnel that allowed a rapist to escape on Tuesday.
Faizal Iman, 36, had been sentenced by the courts to 20 years’ jail and 20 strokes of the cane in a rape case and was about to be sent to the Tawau prison when he fled.
“We are looking at all angles and will not hesitate to take action against the police personnel assigned to escort the convict from the court to the prison,” Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said.
A hunt has been mounted and anyone with information on Faizal’s whereabouts should contact the police.
“We are doing everything we can to hunt down for the convict and we will make an arrest soon,” he said.
Faizal was clad in a red shirt and brown short pants with many pockets when he escaped.
