SUNGAI BESAR: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali managed to side-step an awkward situation by endorsing the Amanah candidate while referring to the PAS candidate who was also present as "my friend".

The Selangor Mentri Besar who arrived for a buka puasa event in Sunga Besar in a white Malay top and green sarung, stood on stage with Amanah's Azhar Abdul Shukur while PAS' Dr Rani Osman looked from where he was seated at the VIP table.

"As the deputy president of PKR and after much discussion, I am giving my support to the candidate from Pakatan Harapan.

"I believe that with his background (in theology), his credibility and family background, he will be able to be our voice in Parliament from Sungai Besar," said Azmin.

Then looking towards Dr Rani, he said: "Dr Rani, don't be sad, we are still colleagues in the state assembly, you have contributed a lot. I pray that you will continue to succeed and contribute," he said.

At this point, some of those in the audience shouted, "Tapak!", urging Dr Rani to join Azmin and Azhar on stage but he stayed in his seat.

With that, Azmin managed to avoid stepping on a land mine that could have undermine his state government.

An army of reporters and cameraman had surged around Azmin as he arrived in his black Toyota Camry. When he finally got out of the car, he warmly greeted both candidates.

Dr Rani was seated at the same VIP table as Azmin, Azhar and PKR vice presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tian Chua.

When approached Dr Rani said he was there because he wanted to welcome Azmin.

"He is my mentri besar and I want to be here to welcome him," said Dr Rani.

He added that it was also reflective of matured and professional politics.

In his speech Azmin said he was not able to frequently visit the place during the Sungai Besar by-election campaign because he was accompanying Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to breaking of fast events at mosques in the state almost every evening.

"I asked Tuanku to grant me permission to be here this evening and Tuanku allowed me to do so," said Azmin adding that he will come again on Friday.
