SUNGAI BESAR: Barisan Nasional should not depend on the split between PAS and Amanah to win the Sungai Besar parliamentary by-election, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (pic) .
Both Umno and Barisan, he said, should instead focus on strengthening internally by preparing their machinery at all levels.
“I do not deny that they have problems but we cannot bank on their problems to make our party stronger. Whatever it is, we must focus on our own machinery,” he told reporters after a walkabout at the Ramadan bazaar in Taman Padu Permai here yesterday.
The top party leadership, he said, was in the midst of going to the ground to ensure that the standard operating procedures determined at the liaison level were implemented smoothly.
“During the campaigning period, we must take the advantage to further improve our machinery and get the party closer to the rakyat.
“Firstly, we want to identify our members and make sure that they come out to vote for us on polling day. We also want voters living outside the constituency to come back and thirdly, our machinery must vote early on polling day,” he said.
He also urged voters not to fall for sensational issues spun by certain quarters, especially during Rama-dan.
Earlier, when meeting the party’s machinery at the Parit Satu Timur ballot operation centre, Hisham-muddin reminded them to keep the momentum from the victory in the Sarawak state election.
“In the Sarawak state election, there was a swing of support away from the Opposition.
“However, our critics claimed that it was because Umno was not there and it was due to the popularity of the Sarawak Chief Minister and not the party’s president.
“If we close our ranks, we can refute all those allegations. We won Sarawak not because of coincidence but that the majority of the rakyat wants Barisan.
“That is our test now and we need to win the test,” said Hishammuddin, who also took time to meet voters and break fast at surau Ulumuddin, near Kampung Baru Nelayan.
