KOTA KINABALU: Over 1,500 people were made homeless in a pre-dawn fire that destroyed some 250 squatter homes in northern Kudat.

Kudat district officer Sapdin Ibrahim said there were no reports of casualties as villagers of the wooden stilt houses at Kg Landung Ayang Laut some 3km from Kudat town managed to flee when the fire started at about 5am on Monday.

“We are still gathering information of the affected villagers,” he said when contacted.

Fire and Rescue Department public relation officer Mohd Affendy K Ramin said firemen managed to bring the fire under control at about 8am and ended the operation at about 11am.

“The cause of fire and total losses are still being investigated,” he said.

He said most of the villagers living in the area were citizens.

It is learnt that some of the affected families will be staying at their friends’ or relatives’ homes for the time being.

Many will also be placed at the community hall temporarily.
