Trio spared the noose but get 12 years’ jail

GEORGE TOWN: Three men, who were spared the gallows when the Federal Court ordered a retrial of their drug trafficking case, have been jailed 12 years after they pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of possession.

Despatch clerk M. Thiyagarajan, 31, furniture maker Patrick Jayaraj, 44, and technician K. Jayakumar, 51, admitted to possessing 48.8gm of heroin and 37.4gm of monoacetylmorphines in front of a food outlet in Lebuh Tengku Kudin here at 1.30pm on March 23, 2007.
