Taking a moment: Dr Ahmad Zahid taking a selfie with some Rela members after presenting the Rela rank to Mas Ermieyati and exco members in a ceremony in Putrajaya.

PUTRAJAYA: Rela has kicked out 186,000 members in a move to weed out bad hats in its ranks, said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said some of those expelled were involved in criminal activities while others were not even Malaysian.

The clean-up exercise started in January and zeroed in on those who were drug addicts and those who misused the weapons assigned to them.

Some 34 former members committed offences listed in the Penal Code, he added.

The paramilitary civil volunteer corps has 3.8 million members nationwide.

“Rela is an honourable organisation. It is the nation’s second line of defence after the police and armed forces,” he said.

“That is why we only want members who are honourable, clean, honest and of high integrity to serve in this noble organisation,” he said at a ceremony to present Rela associate memberships to Puteri Umno exco members.

Leading the group getting the memberships was Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermiyati Samsuddin.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said an organisation must not just depend on having a large number of members to be significant, but “should also have quality personnel”.

He said Rela must engage with people at all levels of society, including attracting the younger generation to become members and be involved in its activities.
