KUCHING: Preserve the current Government if you want to preserve the sanctity of Islam in the country, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Speaking to the congregation at Masjid Ikhwanul Islam here Monday night, the Prime Minister said the current leadership had been responsible for turning Malaysia into a successful Muslim nation.

"In Islam, the concept of leadership cannot be separated from religion. So if we want to preserve Islam, we must preserve the leadership," he said after performing prayers with residents from Taman Sukma, here.

Najib said there would be negative consequences if the people chose a leadership that was not as committed to defending Islam.

"So think carefully.  I do not wish to campaign in a mosque, but the principle of it is important. It must be based on what is in the best interests of Islam," he added.

Najib also announced that a new mosque would be built in the area, as the current one was too small for the increasing number of residents in the area.

"God willing, I will provide an allocation for the new mosque, once a site has been identified," the Prime Minister said.

Present at the function were Works Minister and Petrajaya MP Datuk Fadillah Yusof, as well as Barisan Nasional candidate for Samariang Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
