KOTA TINGGI: A fisherman is missing after falling into the sea while steering his trawler seven nautical miles off the southeast coast of Tanjung Leman here.

Tanjung Sedili Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) enforcement operations deputy director Cmdr Mustafa Kamal Abas said the victim, Chia Swee Lui, 50, and three crewmen, aged between 45 and 55, went to sea on Thursday.

He said the incident on Sunday was believed to have happened when Chia was manoeuvring the boat as the crewmen slept.

“When the crewmen realised he was missing, they alerted MMEA, at around 4.30pm,” he said in a statement yesterday.

MMEA deployed its personnel in two boats, Bot Penggalang 43 and Bot Kilat 16, , he said.

“The search was stopped at 7pm due to limited visibility.

“We continued our operation at 7am,” said Mustafa.
