KOTA BARU: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should apologise to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Malaysians for his allegations over the RM2.6bil donation, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

He reasoned that Najib had been consistent with his responses on the issue despite the many baseless accusations that were levelled against him.

“From the very beginning, the Prime Minister had said that the funds were donated by the Saudi government and he was very consistent (with his response),” he told reporters after a Mesra Siswa Perdana 2016 programme at SMK Kadok here yesterday.

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir had on Friday confirmed that the donation to Najib was from his country and “nothing was expected in return”.

“We are aware of the donation and it is genuine with nothing expected in return.

“We are also fully aware that the Attorney-General of Malaysia has thoroughly investigated the matter and found no wrongdoing.

“So as far as we are concerned, the matter is closed,” Adel had told Malaysian reporters in Istanbul.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali had on Jan 26 cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in relation to investigations into SRC International Sdn Bhd and the RM2.6bil alleged to have been deposited into Najib’s personal bank account.

Salleh said it concurred with investigations conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Mohamed Apandi that there were no elements of corruption and the money was not from 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

“Now that the truth is out, Tun Mahathir should apologise to the Prime Minister and Malaysians for what he had done which had caused certain parties to have a negative view of the country.

“By right, we should give our undivided support to the Government in addressing current issues, especially economic issues, that is most crucial,” he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, the Umno Veterans Club also urged Dr Mahathir to apologise to Najib.

Club secretary Datuk Mustapha Yaakub said the confirmation of the donation by Adel proved that all the accusations against Najib were lies.

“Tun Mahathir has created chaos in Umno that resulted in the suspension of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Umno deputy president,” he added. – Bernama
