KOTA KINABALU: The issuance of new identity cards for Sabahans should be fast tracked in view of the high number of foreigners obtaining the documents illegally.
Parti Bersatu Sabah deputy president Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said that both the federal and state governments should expedite the retraction of illegal identity cards and speed up the issuance of new identity cards to genuine Sabahans.
Amid more cases of “fake Sabahans” being detected in peninsular Malaysia, Dr Maximus reiterated the party’s call to implement the measures as part of efforts to clean Sabah of illegal immigrants.
The issuance of the new ICs is part of the recommendations contained in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) Report to resolve the illegal immigrants problem in Sabah.
“Many say it's a difficult task, but we in PBS believe it's doable. For a start, deal with proven cases of illegal issuance and let those questionable IC holders prove that they are indeed genuine citizens,” Dr Ongkili said when opening the PBS Tandek division meeting in Kota Marudu.
He said that the re-registration effort was the only means to filter out unqualified foreigners who have obtained citizenship illegally.
Both the Federal and state governments must take the necessary action to implement the RCI recommendation to re-register all Malaysians of Sabah origin for the territorial sovereignty of Sabah and security of Malaysia, he said.
