Shots fired at Kedah prison

ALOR SETAR: An unidentified man fired 10 shots into the Alor Setar Prison compound, narrowly missing the three wardens on duty there.

Two of the wardens were at the guard tower while another at the sentry post when the shooting occurred at about 10.45pm on Thursday.

In relating the incident, Mohd Fitri Abdul Zaman, 31, said he was in the guard post when suddenly two men on a motorcycle stopped about 10m away.

“The pillion rider then got off and fired six shots towards my direction before firing another four at the guard tower with two of my colleagues inside.

“I quickly ducked to take cover when the shots rang out,” he said, adding that luckily, none of them were hit.

The trigger-happy gunman and the motorcyclist fled the scene soon after the random shooting.

Mohd Fitri said he then alerted a senior prison officer on duty, who lodged a police report on the matter.

Kedah CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Nashir Ya said a police team recovered several 9mm bullet slugs which hit the walls and glass panels of the guard post and watch tower.

“We are now trying to determine the motive of the shooting which has been classified as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he said.

Alor Setar Prison director Wan Sani Ab Latiff declined to comment on the incident as police investigations were underway.
