Don’t keep digging up UEC recognition issue, says Chong

PORT KLANG: Efforts to have the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) recognised are ongoing, and all stakeholders are waiting for the Higher Education Ministry’s final decision, said Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon.

“I have said this many times, the effort is ongoing. The Higher Education Minister had also responded by saying that discussions are underway to iron out some technical issues on the recognition.

“We already have the mutual understanding that the UEC will be accepted as an entry qualification to local universities. The issue need not be dug up and questioned all the time,” he said when met after visiting the Port Klang Free Zone here earlier.

Recently, Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said in the Dewan Rakyat that the Cabinet, in a meeting on Nov 6 last year, had decided not to recognise the certificate because the examination was not based on the national curriculum and education philosophy.

He was reported to have said this was a reality that had to be accepted as it was related to the nation’s interest and sovereignty.

Chong said that all parties should give more space to the Education Ministry, Higher Education Ministry, United Chinese School Committees’ Association (Dong Zong) and other education groups to work on the issue.

“For now, the answer is standard because we have yet to recognise the UEC. We have already reached this level of technicality, and Dong Zong has also opened up on its stance on the Bahasa Malaysia minimum passing grade and changes in the History curriculum.

“All of us are working closely together on this. Let the accreditation experts sort out details on the recognition,” Chong added.

Separately, Dong Zong has asked Kamalanathan to explain his statement about the UEC.

“His statement has clearly confused the people. We feel that there is a need for him to explain if the statement was the stance and policy of the Education Ministry or simply his own personal views.

“He should explain clearly what the UEC has to do with national sovereignty,” said Dong Zong in a statement here yesterday.

It added that UEC graduates had also contributed significantly to nation building.

“It is totally absurd and bizarre to link UEC with national sovereignty.

“If Kamalanathan cannot come up with a reasonable explanation, we want him to retract his statement and issue a public apology,” said the movement.
