JOHOR BARU: Johor police have urged local authorities to not renew licences of family entertainment outlets in the state in efforts to weed out illegal gambling activities.

State police chief Comm Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said that licences for most of these outlets statewide, issued by local councils, would be expiring by June this year.

"I urge the relevant authorities to not allow renewal as many of the licences for these outlets were being misused for gambling activities using gaming machines.

"If they still want to go ahead in renewing the licences, then they should also take up the responsibility of monitoring these outlets to ensure it stays clear of illegal activities," Wan Ahmad told reporters after attending the state police contingent monthly assembly at its headquarters here on Tuesday.

He said it was unfair to solely blame the police force on the operation of such illegal activities especially at family entertainment outlets, as the licences were issued by other authorities.
