'Tonto' thwarts chase against cigarette smugglers

KAJANG: Four Customs officers, who were chasing a lorry suspected of carrying smuggled cigarettes, were stopped dead in their tracks by a Proton Gen-2, believed to be driven by a “tonto”.

A source close to the investigation said the officers, who were conducting a special operation, spotted the lorry at Km5.2 of the Lekas highway heading to Kajang from Seremban at around 9.15am on Tuesday.

“The officers were in a Nissan Murano. They suspected that the lorry was carrying smuggled cigarettes and tried to stop it.

“However, the lorry picked up speed and the Gen-2 blocked the Murano," said the source.

“The Gen-2 blocked the Murano for about 10 to 15 minutes.

“With the chase impeded, the officers rammed the Murano into the Gen-2, causing it to skid out of control and crash into a road divider,” the source said.

The driver got out of the damaged car and fled.

The Customs officers, who were not carrying weapons during the operation, have lodged a police report on the incident.
