KUALA LUMPUR: Punishing Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir over their signing of a citizens' declaration that is calling for the Prime Minister to step down will not solve any problem, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said.
“My approach is different. My approach is kasih sayang (loving); punishing solves no problems,” Shahidan, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, told reporters at Parliament lobby yesterday.
“If we do something with the intent to sideline certain quarters, it will not solve any problem. I leave it to the respective agency to judge. If everyone becomes a judge, then we have a problem,” he said.
Tangga Batu MP Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah said the duo’s sacking was not necessary.
“It is enough that he (Muhyiddin) has been suspended as the deputy president,” said the deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister.
Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said calls to sack Muhyiddin and Mukhriz were not from the members.
"They are the calls by the supreme council members. I am sure they will discuss it and if they think these people have breached the party constitution, they may take action," said the Gua Musang MP.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the supreme council should not be the sole decision-maker in the party.
“There is a process. We know that the supreme council has the ultimate power, but you cannot be the one who is investigating, making the judgement and suggesting who is going to fill it (the post) up.
“The investigation should be done separately, and so must the punishment.
“It should be done fairly, and we have a disciplinary committee – they should investigate before someone is sacked,” he said.
Shafie said this process was not reflected in this situation.
“What kind of opinion did they give? Muhyddin was not even called. There will come a time and there will be a debate,” he added.
On Sunday, Umno supreme council members started the ball rolling by urging the party leadership to expel Muhyiddin and Mukhriz at the next party supreme council meeting.
Supreme council member Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the duo had crossed the line.
Umno supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said he would propose the motion to sack Muhyiddin and Mukhriz at the meeting, expected to be at the end of the month.
