Grand event: Devotees watching the ‘cheah hoay’ ceremony at the Hai Choo Soo (Sea Pearl) Temple in Tanjong Tokong.

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia’s economy, as forecasted by the Tua Pek Kong (God of Prosperity) at the Hai Choo Soo (Sea Pearl) Temple in Tanjong Tokong, will be average in the first four months.

Poh Hock Seah Temple honorary secretary Lim Hooi Kooi said the century-old chneah hoay (flame-watching) ceremony started at 11.53pm with the first flame recorded 12 minutes later.

“The height of the flame represents the ‘Good, Average and Fair’ in the context of the country’s economy.

“The first flame from the fanning showed that the economy from January to April will be average,” he told a press conference after the ceremony yesterday.

Lim added that the fanning was carried out two other times and the flames were not as high, this showed that the prospect from May onwards will be less optimistic and businessmen should take care of their investments.

Poh Hock Seah Temple chairman Datuk Lim Chooi Beng said the annual ceremony was conducted from 11pm to midnight on the 14th day of the lunar new year.

“The ceremony took place when the tide covered the biggest boulder at the bay fronting the temple,” said Chooi Beng.

Devotees flocked to the Hai Choo Soo Temple to witness first hand the ceremony for 2016.
