MIRI: Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud publicly praised Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem for implementing numerous good policies since taking over from him.
Taib, the former Chief Minister, also lauded the Chinese community in Sarawak for having played crucial roles in developing the state and the country and also for forging inter-racial and inter-religious unity.
Speaking to a multi-racial crowd of more than 2,000 at a grand Chinese New Year dinner organised by the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations on Saturday night, Taib said he was confident that the Chinese would give Adenan full backing to ensure continuous progress for the state.
Taib said he had witnessed how the Chinese prospered while he was the chief minister.
“I saw how they brought unity and harmony to the state by getting the community and other races to work together. I want to congratulate their efforts in business, education and industry.
“The efforts by the Chinese to always upgrade their status have seen the state and country grow by leaps and bounds.
“We are not very far from developed status now because we managed to get united to move forward as one.
“Some of my friends from abroad said that we are much better off than Western countries in social unity and harmony. The Chinese have played a pivotal role in forging this unity and harmony,” he said.
Taib also praised the Chinese for daring to take up tough challenges in business and industries.
“This spirit of taking new challenges and new undertakings with confidence, as can be seen here in the state, especially in Miri, is what we should be proud of.
“It can inspire the young. I have seen this in the history of Miri.
“The Chinese are very well organised. Use your knowledge, experience, entrepreneurial expertise, and technical and management skills to good use.
“Help other races by sharing your experience and cooperation. The new CM Adenan is continuing the good policies and continuing the trend of bringing further progress.
“With his policies in place, I am confident the Chinese will prosper even further along with other races,” said Taib.
The federation’s Miri chairman Hii Teck Yun thanked Taib and Adenan for their fairness towards all races in Sarawak.
He said the federation would continue to support them in bringing more progress and prosperity to the state.
