ALOR SETAR: A meeting between Barisan Nasional state assemblymen and members of the Kedah Regency Council is expected to be held Monday, believed to be related to the political crisis involving the position of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir as Mentri Besar.
Several state assemblymen had been informed of the meeting, which is expected to be held at Wisma Darul Aman here at 2pm Monday.
A state assemblyman who declined to be named said he had received the information through Whatsapp but declined to comment further.
"No letters but I have received the message to be present at the meeting tomorrow," he told Bernama.
Another assemblyman said he received the message on the matter and was contacted by an officer from Wisma Darul Aman.
Meanwhile, a state assemblyman confirmed he would be attending the meeting and is learnt they would be summonsed to meet the council one by one.
The political environment in Kedah reached boiling point recently when Mukhriz came under pressure from Kedah Umno state assemblymen and MPs as well as senior state party leaders, headed by Kedah Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.
They openly voiced their opinion that they had lost confidence in Mukhriz's leadership as Mentri Besar and Umno Liaison Committee chairman while 19 of the 21 Barisan state assemblymen comprising 17 from Umno and two from the MCA are believed to have signed a statutory declaration.
On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak held an audience with Regency Council chairman Tunku Sallehuddin Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, who is also the Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, at Istana Darul Aman, Bukit Persekutuan, in the Federal Capital to discuss about a change of Mentri Besar.
Also present at the 30-minute meeting were two other council members, the Tunku Laksamana of Kedah Tan Sri Tunku Abdul Hamid Thani and the Tunku Panglima Besar of Kedah, Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Shafinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.
At a media conference on the same day after chairing an Umno Supreme Council meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Najib was reported as saying that he had presented several proposals to the Regency Council chairman on the Mentri Besar crisis. - Bernama
