PETALING JAYA: It isn’t very often that we get a famous Hong Kong star visiting our premises, so Chapman To caused quite a stir when he dropped in at Menara Star yesterday afternoon to wish media friends a Happy Chinese New Year.
Movie fans quickly queued up for snapshots with the affable actor-turned-director, who is in Malaysia to launch his upcoming Lunar New Year flick, Let’s Eat.
Star Media Group chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai also met with To and shared some laughs over their love for good food and festive celebrations.
To, 43, is making his directorial debut with Let’s Eat (Hoi Fan La in Cantonese), a RM5.25mil flick shot mostly in Malaysia.
The food-themed movie was scripted by To, who also stars as the protagonist Dai Hung, a self-deprecating head chef whose signature dish is his traditional Hainanese chicken rice.
“I spent a couple of months in Malaysia to research and write the movie inspired by the Malaysian dish,” he said.
The cast for Let’s Eat includes Hong Kong stars Aimee Chan, Lo Hoi Pang as well as Malaysian actors Tommy Kuan, Daphne Low, Steve Yap, Henley Hii and Lim Ching Miau.
Let’s Eat is produced by Malaysia’s Asia Tropical Films and Singapore’s Clover Films and distributed by GSC Movies in Malaysia.
During this visit to Malaysia, To has conducted eating competitions and cooking demonstrations to promote the movie.
He will also meet fans in roadshows and mall appearances this weekend. To and co-stars Chan, Low and Kuan will meet fans at 1 Utama LG Oval New Wing today at 7pm.
Tomorrow, To and Low will be conducting four meet-and-greet sessions in Penang: Megamal Pinang, Concourse at 3.30pm; Queensbay Mall, Central Atrium at 5.30pm; Gurney Plaza, Main Concourse at 7.30pm; and Kwong Wah Carnival at 10pm.
On Sunday, To and Low will continue with three more roadshows: Taiping Sentral Mall, Centre Concourse at 11.30am; Ipoh Parade, Main Concourse at 1.30pm; and Sunway Pyramid Orange Atrium here at 7.30pm.
Let’s Eat opens at cinemas nationwide on Feb 4.
