SUNGAI PETANI: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir may be given a new position if he is dropped as Mentri Besar, said Kedah exco member Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain.

Tajul Urus, who is Tanjung Dawai assemblyman and Merbok division chief, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would not give up on Mukhriz.

He said the decision to replace Mukhriz was not meant as a punishment but to provide him with a better opportunity.

“A new Mentri Besar has been identified.

“He is an experienced politician and a well-respected leader,” he said to newsmen after distributing Chinese New Year items to the old folks at a Chinese temple in Semeling near here yesterday.

Tajul Urus said he believed there would be a change in the Mentri Besar in the next three days.

Although his name has been mentioned as a possible Mentri Besar, Tajul Urus said he was not keen on the job.

“Whether the candidate is highly educated or not, it is not a problem since he would be assisted by state exco members who are well-versed in their own fields,” he said.

In a related development, Kedah Umno deputy chairman Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said none of the 14 division chiefs were forced to sign a memorandum on the removal of Mukhriz.

“They signed the memorandum willingly.

“How can they be pushed from side to side?” he said when replying to question during a press conference after attending the fifth anniversary of the Intercity bus company at the Shahab Perdana bus terminal in Alor Setar yesterday.

Mukhriz and his wife Datin Seri Norzieta Zakaria attended an investiture ceremony at the Istana Anak Bukit from 10am till noon where 150 recipients were conferred awards by Kedah Regency Council chairman Datuk Seri Diraja Tan Sri Tuanku Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah.

He looked calm, and was seen talking to several people.
