PUTRAJAYA: The improved 1Malaysia Student Discount Card (Kads1m) will be launched in March.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said the card will have more features, including a debit card function, and more merchants will be added to the current 402 participating companies.

“We will be launching the improved card in March, in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). At present there are 402 participating merchants and we will be adding even more to new card.

“We have gathered a lot of input and feedback from students over the past few months and we will use some of these recommendations to upgrade the card.

“Our aim is to ensure that every student who owns the card will truly feel that the card can ease their burden,” Hamzah said after a meeting with consumer groups and traders associations here Thursday.

Further details on the new features of the improved card will only be made known in March, he added.

Launched in 2012, the card has 1.8 million cardholders and gives students a discount of up to 60% on selected items and other benefits at various retail outlets and services.

An enhanced version of the card was announced last week by Hamzah after the first meeting of the government high-level committee on rising cost of living.

Hamzah had said that the government aimed to make the card similar to that in Britian where its usage is more widespread and even used to get rebates on transportation services.
