Video shows Bangsar mall snatch theft

KUALA LUMPUR: A video clip showing a snatch theft in broad daylight outside a busy shopping mall in Bangsar here on Monday went viral on social media.

The two minute-long clip, taken by the mall’s CCTV camera, showed the thief arriving on a motorcycle at the entrance as a few luxury cars arrived to drop and fetch passengers.

The man waited on his vehicle parked next to a luxury car, and so as not to attract attention, pretended to look into his sling bag.

Seconds later, a woman was seen walking out of the mall. The thief casually rode up to her, snatched her bag off her hand and drove off, dragging the woman on the ground for several metres.

The security guards at the mall and members of the public were seen chasing the motorcycle which quickly disappeared into the busy traffic.

Brickfield OCPD Asst Comm Sharul Othman Mansor said the case occurred at around 6.50pm on Jan 11.

“The victim was a 37-year-old Japanese housewife.

“She was waiting at the vallet for her Perodua MyVi when a man on a motorcycle snatched her handbag which contained ATM and credit cards, and about RM200 cash,” he said adding that CCTV footage from the area was acquired but the motorcycle license plate number cannot be seen clearly.

He said the victim suffered scratches to her left arm and thigh as she was dragged by the snatch thief.

“The CCTV footage will be sent to Bukit Aman Forensic Unit for further analysis,” he said urging anyone with information on the case to contact the police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or visit the nearest police station.
